44 Funny Political Cartoon Strike Outs: Bunning, Health Care, Chile, Toyota

From Denny: Cartoonists weaned themselves off the Olympics and went full tilt onto the battle for health care reform. They also enjoyed lampooning Republican Senator Bunning denying 400,000 people their unemployment benefits paychecks. He seemed to think it was funny that now many people will lose their homes or could not afford to feed their families because of his thoughtless act that lasted almost a week. Those people will never recoup that one week's worth of monies.

Have you noticed that the Chilean earthquake, 500 times more powerful than the Haiti earthquake, has received so little media attention? Check out the cartoons on this sentiment.

They mentioned in passing the sadness over the recent Sea World death and the death of six day mail service from the United States Post Office. Over time email has won out over cutting down too many trees to send mindless products overflowing in mail order catalogs of garbage made in China, poisoned with heavy metal contaminants we don't really need anyway. (Gee, "Do ya think?" I have an opinion about Chinese products? :)

Lampooning the arrogance, financial stinginess and foot-dragging service of Toyota won out as the all time favorite of cartoonists to blast this week. Climate change received a few nods too. Democrat Rep. Rangel of New York hasn't won any points of late and it was long over due for him to step down. Actually, what we need are term limits as both sides of the aisle have people who have been in Washington far too long and it has compromised or corrupted them.

I propose no more than five year terms for Senators, one or two terms maximum. House Representatives should get no more than five terms, for a total of ten years. And the Supreme Court? We should have impeached the fakers like Thomas and Scalia a long time ago for wrong-doing in the 2000 Presidential election as it was clear there was a conflict of interest with their children working in the Bush campaign. Term limits for a Justice should be a maximum of 15 to 20 years and then they are forced to retire - or if they hit the magic age of 80.

As to credit card reform, we all need to put our feet in the backs of the politicians to do far more than the anemic legislation they passed 18 months ago. The lobbyists won out then, already planning the highway robbery tactics of good and bad accounts gamesmanship, acting more like shady back alley loan sharks than legal bankers. Expect the rising tide of public anger to demand break-up of these monopoly banks. As it is the smaller banks are under their thumbs for they must borrow money from the big banks. Only the largest banks have the buying power to buy from the federal government. If Obama would stop that practice then the smaller home town banks would stand a chance and could compete. The consumer would win out too and not be held hostage to monopoly banks.

I guess that pretty much sums up the feeling of the American public: we feel like we are being held hostage - by our government, our insurance companies, our banks and our cars.

A Poem to Think About When You Dream

From Denny: Every Friday I put up an original poem for the Libations Friday segment over at my news, politics and poetry blog, The Social Poets. I also like to pair wonderful photography from my friends over at flickr with my poems. Discover someone new and enjoy their photos! Here is this week's offering:



Today was one of those triumphant days when a friend broke through into a new realization of where fear had taken her was a place she did not find comfortable. There comes a time in our spiritual development that we cannot return to the "tried and true" of third dimensional thinking and doing. We must finally stop, be still, patient, learn to wait and trust. When we do, life falls into place faster and into a better fit.

Often we are restless but cannot pinpoint as to why. We rush off to solve our immediate problems by creating still another. Usually, it's best to stop long enough to listen inside ourselves to learn where we belong at each moment of our life. When we do, we ease into a harmonious perfect rhythm that enriches us on so many levels. Take the time to honor yourself today and grow in your awareness.






Honoring Ourselves






Today I was faraway deep in thought,
Tapping away the late winter sighs and
Pondering the way of honoring ourselves,
Gathering the movies of life in my mind.







I looked over my shoulder at the day that was
And smiled to the moments of the hours
That touched lightly in their passing each other,
Stepping the path of the footprints left behind.







The natural rhythms of the day progressed,
Cooking meals, cleaning dishes and laundry,
Working at the office, returning to reunite,
Unwinding into easy conversations enjoyed.







Pulling the warm covers over as we sleep,
Cats crawling up to claim their blanket spot,
We talk quietly aloud of our heart’s thoughts,
Easing from the day into the calming night.







Sliding into rest, our eyes flutter and close,
Our silent dreams liberated once again,
Our tour guide clutches us tightly as we
Journey on the wings of our thoughts.







The sights we see, all that’s imagined is true,
Collecting thoughts, creating fresh reality,
We spiral down through the dark to view,
Awakening to our creation of the new day.

Chef Jamie Oliver Discovers American Kids Dont Know Veggies

From Denny: Chef Jamie Oliver recently discovered that America's first graders cannot identify even the most common vegetables and fruits like tomatoes and potatoes.

The British chef is on a mission to improve the diets of America's school kids. He entered a first grade classroom and queried the children as he held up each vegetable from a table display. They did not know one. All they knew was they didn't like vegetables when he first uncovered the display as audible gasps were heard throughout the classroom.

His first stop on Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution - celebrity chef of Naked Chef fame - was to visit what is known as the unhealthiest city in America: Huntington, West Virginia. Chef Oliver is determined to improve America's ingrained bad eating habits and turn us away from the alarming rising rate of obesity. He is hoping this new series will be the catalyst for a healthy food reaction across America.

Funny Groundhog Phils Says 2 More Weeks of Winter

From Denny: Here we are now four long weeks into an extended winter, proclaimed by the celebrity groundhog himself to last a full six weeks. Punxsutawney Phil is known around the globe for his famous forecasting abilities even the psychics envy. And he does it all on a non-cash basis, preferring to barter for great room and board, yummy treats, lots of petting and celebrity status adoration. Read that as he is one spoiled pampered little guy. His fan club is known as the Inner Circle and is made up of local dignitaries dedicated to providing his lavish style.

Since we are still stuck in another two weeks of winter it was fun to check out the official site of the famous groundhog himself and discover some funny facts about the celebration. After all, this famous psychic was correct yet again this year.

Phil has quite the devoted fan base. There are T-shirts with his loving face, coffee mugs with his morning "mug." Stainless steel travel coffee mugs are lovingly adorned with his message. Groundhog cookies come with a recipe you can make your own or available for purchase. Powerful refrigerator magnets remind you of his presence in your life!

There are groundhog jokes, groundhog cookie cutters (I kid you not), groundhog lesson plans for teachers, a poetry competition and more.

While researching the origins of this crazy celebration that now millions of people watch all over the globe, I had a laughing good time. It was time to share. Here is a sampling of the funnies to get you started grinning.

Chilean Earthquake Shortened Earths Day

From Denny: This is a fact few of us thought about when we first heard the news of the 8.8 earthquake in Chile. It really does make us wonder about the idea of the exponential curve in relation to a longer period of time how these incidences will add up to effect the planet. What am I talking about? The Earth's day is now just a small amount shorter.

Richard Gross, and another scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, put the pencil to the math. They calculated this recent high magnitude earthquake has now shortened the day by 1.26 microseconds. In case you forgot, a microsecond is one-millionth of a second. The length of a day is the time it takes for Earth to complete one rotation: 86,400 seconds or 24 hours.

OK, so how did this earthquake accomplish this feat of shortening Earth's day? It caused the Earth to rotate faster by nudging some of its mass closer to the planet's axis. Reminds you of one of those Olympic skaters in a spin where they pull up their arms to increase the speed of the spin.

The opposite can happen too. An earthquake "can slow the rotation and lengthen the day - if it redistributes mass away from that axis," Gross said.

Can this small change be permanent? According to Gross the answer is yes. He also commented that a series of high magnitude earthquakes like this one could possible add up to make the day shorter "but these changes are very, very small."

How small are these changes? There are so small that scientists are not able to record them directly. You would be surprised how much of science is not direct but rather indirect observation and recording. Gross also stated that true observations of the length of the day are accurate to five-millionths of a second. What about his estimate? His estimate about the Chilean quake's effect is just a quarter of that span of time.
